Many parents in our modern world are choosing to have a blessing/naming ceremony for the baby/child, rather than a religious christening or baptism, allowing their child to choose their own beliefs and values when they are older.
The aim of the blessing/naming ceremony is to welcome a child into a community of family and friends; to name, to bless and to celebrate this little Being !
It is a tradition for the parents to select mentors or guardians who they know will take a vested interest, and guide the child as they grow into adulthood.
This ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to include the participation of family members and friends, through readings, poems and verses, especially chosen for the occasion. Candle-lighting ceremonies, tree-planting, finger-print trees and other precious moments can also be included. There can be plenty of opportunities for creativity to be included into these ceremonies, and I am happy to offer suggestions.
